Indiana Charter Innovation Center Calls for Honest Conversations on Charter Schools

Indianapolis, IN – Today, during the Indiana Senate session, an alarming amount of misinformation about charter schools was presented as fact. From misleading claims about transparency and accountability to outright falsehoods about school closures, these inaccuracies do a disservice to Indiana students and families.

Among the most egregious statements:

  • Senator Fady Qaddoura (D-Indianapolis) falsely claimed that charter school board meetings are closed to the public. This is inaccurate. Charter schools follow Indiana’s Open Door Law, just like traditional public schools.
  • Senator Greg Taylor (D-Indianapolis) stated that an Indianapolis charter school serves only three Black students. This claim is wildly misleading. He did not specify which school, but both schools in question serve diverse student populations.
  • Senator Qaddoura falsely stated that Purdue Polytechnic High School is closing. This is blatantly untrue. PPHS remains open and fully operational.
  • Senator Hunley (D-Indianapolis) falsely claimed that a Christel House school closed. No school operated by Christel House Academies has ever closed.

These statements are not just incorrect—they mislead the public and undermine the important work

being done by Indiana’s charter schools to serve students and families.

Public schools—including charter schools—are committed to student success. Misinformation only creates confusion and harms the very communities we all strive to support.

Regardless of one’s stance on charter schools, telling lies and perpetuating myths is never the way to drive policy change. Hoosiers deserve informed, fact-based conversations about education—not political theater.
